Current Inspection Requirement and List of Inspection Stations by County
Please review and distribute as appropriate.
The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) recently refined the inspection requirement for instances in which the inspection expiration date is the same as the registration expiration date or title transaction date. This change resulted from Texas vehicle inspection industry feedback on the implementation of Two Steps, One Sticker.
The change affects some customers renewing registration or requesting initial registration at time of title. When the inspection and registration expiration dates are the same, a new inspection is required before registration renewal. When issuing registration at time of title, a new inspection is required if the inspection expiration date is the same as the title transaction date.
The Two Steps, One Sticker promotional materials, including the registration renewal insert and the materials received by your offices in October 2014, have been updated to reflect the requirement of a new inspection when the inspection and registration dates expire in the same month. TxDMV training materials were also updated to reflect the requirement before the county webinars began on December 9, 2014.
Attached is a side-by-side comparison of the new registration renewal insert, with the new requirement, and the prior registration renewal insert. The new text is in the left column under “Single Expiration Date” and is outlined in red. The other materials will be made available as soon as they have been printed. Please continue to use the existing material you have in stock. We will notify you once the new version is available to be shipped out.
Several counties have requested a resource to use in advising customers of inspection station locations in the county. The following link on the Texas Department of Public Safety website can be used to identify inspection station locations in your county: http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/rsd/vi/VIactiveStationLocator/default.aspx.
