The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) is pleased to announce that we will be fully implemented with NMVTIS on May 12, 2014. NMVTIS is a national consumer protection database that provides title information from states across the country. In Texas, the NMVTIS initiative is known as “Title Check.”
With this full implementation, an inquiry will be conducted in NMVTIS for qualifying title transactions. The inquiry will validate key title fields (e.g., Year, Make, Vehicle Identification Number, and Odometer), check for value limiting brands, and validate the surrendered ownership evidence.
The full implementation of NMVTIS will be a great benefit to our citizens, but we understand these changes will impact us all, and there will be many questions surrounding these changes. In a proactive effort, we have redesigned our Title Check webpage to afford Texas title applicants the ability to see the same NMVTIS information that will be used by the TxDMV before issuing a title. In addition, this Title Check webpage provides users with additional information on NMVTIS, value limiting brands, and other consumer protection tips. You can find Title Check by using the icon on the TxDMV website’s homepage, www.txdmv.gov, or going directly to www.txdmv.gov/title-check.
Additionally, we have already begun an extensive public education initiative. County Tax Assessor-Collector offices have been provided with marketing materials that include push cards, posters, customer counter cards, and brochures. In March, we started placing Title Check inserts inside registration renewal notices. This month, we have already begun airing public service announcements on English- and Spanish-language radio stations. Additionally, we will issue press releases and begin featuring a Title Check video on the home page of our website. For your convenience, we have attached the Title Check brochure.
If you have additional questions about NMVTIS or the Title Check initiative, you may contact our Consumer Relations Division at (888) 368-4689 or by email at AskDMV@TxDMV.gov.
