|TO: TxDMV Customers and Stakeholders
FROM: Whitney Brewster, Executive Director
Yesterday, Governor Greg Abbott announced three appointments to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) Board.
The governor has reappointed Laura Ryan and named her chair of the board. She is the vehicle manufacturing/distribution representative on the board and is vice president of Gulf States Toyota, Inc. She was appointed vice chair of the board in 2012 and has continually provided exceptional guidance since the department was created in 2009.
Governor Abbott has appointed Tyler Police Chief Gary M. Swindle to the board as the law enforcement representative. He will take the seat previously held by McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez.
The governor’s third appointment is Guillermo “Memo” Trevino of Laredo who will take the customer/public seat on the board previously held by attorney Joseph Slovacek. Mr. Trevino is the president of Southern Distributing, Co.
When the 85th Legislature meets in 2017, these appointments will go through the Senate confirmation process, but the appointees will begin serving immediately.
On behalf of the TxDMV Board and staff, I would like to extend our sincerest gratitude for the dedicated service of Chief Rodriguez and Mr. Slovacek. Johnny Walker, owner and president of J.H. Walker Trucking, will continue his current term on the Board as the motor carrier industry representative. Since appointed chair in 2013, his leadership has been invaluable and we look forward to his continued service.
We also look forward to welcoming Chief Swindle and Mr. Trevino to the TxDMV Board and working with Ms. Ryan in her new role as board chair. I believe these appointments will ensure the strong leadership on our board will continue in the years to come.
