Changes to Certified Copies of Titles (CCOs) Become Effective December 31, 2018

Changes Regarding Certified Copies of Titles (CCOs)

Become Effective December 31, 2018

Important changes are coming soon for Certified Copies of Titles (CCOs) in Texas. Beginning December 31, 2018, all CCOs will have a new document number and issue date, and the Registration and Title System (RTS) will be updated immediately with this information.

Any CCO issued on or after December 31, 2018, will supersede any prior Texas title or CCO issued and will be the only acceptable Texas title to transfer ownership.

Original Texas titles and CCOs issued prior to December 31, 2018, will remain valid until a new Texas title or CCO is issued.

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) recommends ensuring you have the most recent and valid ownership document by obtaining a complete title history report on the vehicle. Visit TxDMV’s Title Check program at www.txdmv.gov for an approved provider list.

Should you have any questions about these changes, you may reach out to your county tax office or your nearest TxDMV Regional Service Center. Local office contact information is available on our website at www.txdmv.gov/contact-us.
