As you are aware, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles’ Special Plates Unit can be reached by phone at (512) 374-5010. This line supports county tax assessor-collector’s offices and the general public. In an effort to improve upon service delivery to both of these callers, we are making changes in how calls are handled.
Effective immediately, county support for special plates related matters will be handled by TxDMV Regional Services Centers. In order to receive special plates support from your TxDMV Regional Service Center the following options are available:
- Contact your local TxDMV Regional Service Center through their dedicated county support phone number.
- Contact any TxDMV Regional Service Center by utilizing the existing phone number of (512) 374-5010 and selecting option 1. Please be aware that utilizing this option may result in reaching a non-local TxDMV Regional Service Center.
In the event the special plates inquiry requires more expertise, existing Special Plates Unit staff will serve as Tier 2 support. The TxDMV Regional Service Center will forward your call to the Special Plates Unit staff when necessary.
